Veterinary Services

Our veterinary surgeons offer a wide range of services within consultations. Click on the sub-titles below to learn about our routine procedures.

Flea and Worm Advice

As a general rule we advise worming all adult dogs and cats every 3 months and to follow an appropriate flea prevention strategy. Puppies and kittens require worming more frequently.
Please speak to one of our nurses or vets for a tailored flea and worm strategy for all the animals in your household.

Microchipping

Microchipping can help you get reunited with your lost pet. Microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are inserted under the skin on the scruff of the neck. They are easily inserted, and each microchip contains a unique number that links via computer to your details so that you can quickly be identified as your pet’s owner.
If your pet is found it will usually be taken to either a rescue centre, a charity, the local authority dog warden, or a Veterinary Surgery. All such places usually have hand-held scanners that can be used to detect and read a chip. If a chip is found, then the details you provided at the time of chipping can be used to contact you and reunite you with your pet.
Microchipping is also a legal requirement for dogs over the age of 8 weeks in England, Scotland, and Wales, and cats over the age of 20 weeks in England.
If you are interested in microchipping, or need to update your details for an already-chipped pet, please contact us on 01509 212437.

Neutering

We offer neutering for a variety of species at our practice. Click below to find out more details.

Cats

‘The Cat Group’ – a collection of professional organisations dedicated to feline welfare including the Feline Advisory Bureau, RSPCA, Blue Cross, PDSA, ISFM, and BSAVA advises neutering for all male and female cats. This reduces the risk of unwanted pregnancy and disease. We routinely neuter cats at around 6 months of age.
In females the uterus and ovaries are removed and in males both testicles are removed. In both sexes, neutering only requires small incisions

Dogs

There is a range in ideal timing of neutering in dogs, depending on their breeds. Please ask your veterinary surgeon for further advice on the best timing for spaying and castration in dogs.
The uterus and ovaries are removed in females and both testicles are removed in males. In both sexes, neutering only requires relatively small incisions.

Rabbits

Neutering rabbits has many health and social benefits. Rabbits are social animals and should not be on their own. Neutering will allow rabbits to live together more happily and without the risk of pregnancy. Neutering also protects female rabbits from common problems, such as uterine cancer.
We recommend neutering male rabbits from 4-5 months of age.
The uterus and ovaries are removed in females and both testicles are removed in males. In both sexes, neutering only requires small incisions.

Please contact us on 01509 212437 for specific advice relating to the neutering of your pet.

Vaccinations

Vaccinations protect against diseases which are life threatening, and vaccinations have helped to make many diseases much less common than they used to be. However, these diseases do represent an ever-present threat and only with high levels of vaccination will we keep these diseases under control.
If your pet’s vaccinations aren’t up-to-date, then their immunity to the various diseases may be reduced or absent. These are dangerous, unpleasant diseases, as many owners will testify. If you want more information or are unsure if your pet’s vaccinations are up-to-date, please contact us on 01509 212437.

Cats

We advise that cats be vaccinated against cat flu, feline panleucopaenia, feline leukaemia virus, and chlamydia.

Dogs

Dogs should be vaccinated against parvovirus, leptospirosis, distemper, hepatitis, and parainfluenza.
In addition, it is advised that all dogs going into kennels have a Kennel Cough vaccination.

Rabbits

Rabbits should be vaccinated against Myxomatosis and Viral Haemorrhagic Disease annually.

Nurse Clinics

Appointments with our qualified Veterinary Nurses are available every day.
Our nurses will perform such tasks as clipping nails, removing sutures, and changing dressings and bandages. They also offer a range of clinics.

Dental Check-Up Clinics

Dental care is as important for pets as it is for us. Without regular brushing, it is quite likely that most pets will get some level of dental disease and it has been estimated that 80% of dogs and cats over the age of three need dental treatment.
Dental check-up clinics are with our experienced Veterinary Nurses who know a lot about dental care and the different ways that oral health in pets can be managed. Dental check-ups are advised every 6-12 months. During these check-ups, the nurse can demonstrate cleaning and discuss how to keep your pets mouth in good condition.
These clinics are free for pets on our Pet Health Plan!

Dietary Advice

Dietary advice is available from all of our Veterinary Surgeons and qualified Veterinary Nurses.
Puppies and kittens have very different nutritional requirements from adults. Similarly, older pets can benefit from supplements for joint health. At the various stages of life your pet’s energy requirements can also be quite different.
Our pets are all individuals and some diets are more appropriate for some than others so please feel free to discuss your needs with one of our vets or nurses.
We only recommend top quality foods for your pets and we can supply specialist varieties that are not generally available through high street outlets.
Food is a very important part of treatment for many diseases. These include such things as kidney, bladder, skin, and intestinal ailments as well as mobility and weight problems. If a special diet is required for your pet, this will be prescribed by your vet.

Socialisation Clinics

Our nurses offer free socialisation clinics for any pets that need a bit of a confidence boost for coming into the practice. We work with you and your pet to find the best way to provide comfort in the veterinary environment.
These appointments are free.

Weight Management Clinics

If you are concerned about your pet’s weight, we are happy to offer a weight management clinic appointment with one of our Veterinary Nurses, during which we can weigh your pet and provide dietary advice.
These appointments are free.

Youth Club

This is a free club, which is both fun and informative for all of the family. Your puppy or kitten will benefit from your increased knowledge but also will gain confidence at the surgery and realise that a routine visit to the vets can and should be fun! You will receive a free information pack and goodies along the way.

Please contact us on 01509 212437 to book your appointment with a qualified veterinary nurse.

Facilities

Meadow Lane Vets offers a full range of surgical and dental facilities, diagnostic aids, digital X-ray, ultrasound (including pregnancy ultrasound), on-site blood testing, and pre-operative blood tests. Find out more about our facilities here.

In-House Laboratory Services

Our on-site laboratory is where we test most of our patient’s blood and urine samples. Having these facilities on-site means that we have rapid results, allowing us to make prompt, informed decisions about your pet’s needs and treatment.
Sometimes, we need to send samples off for further testing that can’t be conducted in-house. Our vets will always discuss this with you before we do.

Diagnostic Imaging

We use a similar x-ray machine to those used in hospitals. X-ray is an invaluable diagnostic tool and is especially useful for looking at bones, for example when investigating fractures and osteoarthritis.
Ultrasound is an invaluable diagnostic tool. It provides a dynamic view of the inside of your pet. It is used for investigating many problems and also for confirming pregnancy. It can also be used as a guide to allow us to take non-invasive needle biopsies. Some of our vets have undergone specific training related to ultrasound techniques and have particular skills and interests in this area.
We have recently acquired an endoscope, allowing us to perform more complex procedures.

Retail Sales

A range of specialist products are available from our reception, including chews, treats, toys, collars and leads, harnesses, grooming aids, F10 disinfectant, ear cleaning solutions, veterinary shampoos, toothbrushes, and plug-in diffusers.
